Gum disease or periodontal disease inflicts over half of the adult population. This common oral problem develops from the buildup of plaque, where harmful bacteria reside. Bacteria in plaque causes infection of the gums making them swell, easy to bleed when you brush, and appear red. This is the first stage of gum disease more commonly known as gingivitis.

Gingivitis is often painless which makes it unnoticeable. This result in a gum disease called periodontitis, a worse infection where bacteria corrode the bone structures that support teeth, giving way to tooth loss. At this stage, the patient may notice swelling in the gums as well as bleeding, sores and discharge. The patient most likely suffers bad breath and pain in the gums.

Several causes of gum disease include poor oral hygiene, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, and nutrition deficiency.

What is the link between nutrition and gum disease?

Our body needs adequate amounts of nutrients to combat infection, such as gum diseases.

To strengthen the immune system, a person’s diet should include plenty of antioxidants such as vitamin C and flavonoids. The diet should also include other essential nutrients that are particularly helpful in fighting gum disease such as calcium.

Some types of food promote the growth of bacteria and this fact shows how nutrition and gum disease is related. Foods rich in sugar and starch and sticky foods contribute to bacteria buildup.

Here is a quick guide on proper nutrition and gum disease prevention:

Go for whole foods, which offer many nutrients instead of processed or refined foods

Limit your sugar consumption by avoiding snacks such as pastries, cakes, soft drinks and sweetened fruit juices.

Always include fiber in your diet such as whole grain bread and cereals, broccoli, peas, and fruits like pears and oranges.

Get enough supply of vitamin C, flavonoids, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin B-complex, Co-enzyme Q10, calcium, potassium, selenium, magnesium, zinc, iron and phosphorus.

Enhance your diet with health supplements

To prevent gum disease effectively, proper nutrition should go together with proper dental care. Always remember to brush your teeth at the least two times every day, rinse your mouth with water or a good mouth rinse after meals, floss your teeth once a day, and schedule regular checkups with your dentist.

Nutrition and gum disease treatment

The combination of proper nutrition and gum disease treatment is vital because while proper nutrition does not actually treat gum disease, it significantly helps in speeding up the process of healing and preventing recurrences.

Gum disease otherwise known as periodontal disease is not a pleasurable experience. Although some specific forms of gum diseases are not painful and do not inhibit any signs or symptoms until the disease is on its advanced phase. It is important to avoid gum disease, because not only does the disease ruin the beautiful smile on your face, it also can bring complications like heart disease.

Gum disease is the inflammation and infection of the gums, the connecting fiber that supports and surrounds the teeth, and the bone of the teeth. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of loss of tooth among adults over 30. Gum disease is commonly caused by bacterial plaque. Bacterial plaque is a sticky, colorless substance that forms on the teeth. If the bacterial plaque on the teeth is not removed by way of brushing or flossing the teeth, it will accumulate and hardens into substance called calculus or more known as tartar.

The good news is that, if the gum disease is detected on its early stage, it can be treated and reversed. There are lots and lots of natural gum disease remedies readily available. Using natural gum disease remedies will not only give fast healing process, it will also provide better oral health care. Vitamin C is one of the good natural gum disease remedies found today. Vitamin C is popularly known as an antioxidant. Antioxidants help repair the connective fibers and hasten the regeneration of the bone or bones that were damaged by the gum disease. Individuals who are vitamin C deficient are known to have high probability to experience gum disease.

Also one of the best natural gum disease remedies known today is tea tree oil gel. Tea tree oil gel is proven to be effective against severe chronic gingivitis (a mild form of gum disease). Tea tree oil gel is effective in reducing the degree of gum bleeding and gingivitis. Cranberry juice is also one of the natural gum disease remedies. Cranberry juice prevents the bacteria from sticking to the teeth, thus, reducing the build up of plaque.

Vitamin D is also one of the best natural gum disease remedies easily available. Vitamin D is known to have anti-inflammatory effects hereby reducing or minimizing the susceptibility to gum disease. Researchers found out that individuals who have high vitamin D levels in their blood are less apt to experience bleeding in their gums during gum probing. Vitamin D is the most readily available natural gum disease remedies because sunlight is the most abundant source of vitamin D. Experts recommend 10 to 15 minutes of sun exposure must be done two times a week to have sufficient amount of vitamin D in the blood level.

Always remember that prevention is the always the best cure. Exercise regular oral hygiene routine to have and maintain a healthy and gum disease free smile.

Summary: Bad breath symptoms that halitosis sufferers commonly complain include dry mouth, foul tastes, postnasal drainage, and white module tonsils.

Bad breath is caused by the oral bacteria that are present in your mouth. Common bad breath symptoms that Halitosis sufferers experienced, include a white or yellow film on the tongue, dry mouth, bitter/sour/metallic tastes, post nasal drainage, white nodules on the tonsils, brushing and dental flossing have no effect.

People with bad breath usually observe a white or yellow film on the tongue. This is caused by the accumulation of bacteria and nasal mucous and tends to be heaviest in the later areas of the tongue. For most patients, simply removing this film does not completely eliminate bad breath. The anaerobic bacteria that are responsible for the odorous smell of your mouth are found throughout the entire mouth and in the saliva.

Dry mouth is a common bad breath symptom and is the main causes of halitosis. Chronic dry mouth or xerostomia causes several changes to occur in the mouth. For one, the bacteria become more concentrated in the saliva and tend to evaporate sooner into the air. If this happens, bad breath becomes stronger and more obvious at greater distance. The drying of the mouth alters the pH or acid/base balance of the mouth providing an environment conducive to the oral bacterial growth. Dry mouth usually results in a metallic taste or bitter taste in the mouth.

It is common for people with bad breath to complain bad tastes in their mouths. Familiar descriptions are sour tastes, bitter or metallic taste. These tastes are usually the result of drainage from the sinus, medications being taken, dry mouth conditions, dental infections, leaking dental restorations, and certain oral bacteria. The reduction of salivary flow can result in bad breath condition.

Post nasal drainage is frequently a result of sinus conditions and allergies. It is a thick mucous that drips in the posterior region of the throat from the sinus regions, resulting to a frequent clearing of throat for people with bad breath condition. A person may not be aware that mild form of allergies can result in a mild drainage of mucous. Mucous typically contains large amount of bacteria and proteins from the sinus. These proteins are broken down to amino acids that anaerobic bacteria feed upon and in turn produce foul smelling wastes.

White nodules that are secreted from the tonsils are one of bad breath symptom. Usually, most people do not know about these because they are swallowed not knowingly. Due to the bad odor of these nodules, they tend to assumed as the reasons of their bad breaths.

If brushing and dental flossing your teeth make no difference in reducing halitosis, this can be a sigh of bad breath condition. Loss of self confidence and self esteem can also be a sign that you have bad breath. Most of the patients complained about their insecurities due to their halitosis condition.

Bad Breath in Toddlers is Commonly Caused by Bacteria in the Mouth.

Summary: Bad breath in toddlers can be relieved by having their teeth and tongue brushed regularly.

It is not new to toddlers to have bad breath from time to time. Even if they don’t eat garlic and onions (in fact, they avoid eating them), yet they can have morning breath. Young kids normally have sweet-smelling breath. Throughout the day, a child’s saliva washes away unwanted food debris. Bad breath in toddlers is caused by slow saliva production during sleep resulting to dry mouth. The longer the time that your toddler sleeps, the greater the chance of bacterial growth in the mouth- this can possibly be the cause of bad breath in toddlers in the morning when they awake.

But, this is not the only cause of bad breath in toddlers. For young kids, smelly breath that continues throughout the day is frequently the result of breathing through the mouths, which dries out the mouth resulting to the growth of bacterial. Mouth-breathing kids might have colds, stuffy nose, sinus infections, allergies, or enlarged tonsils which can block the nasal passages. One of the common reasons for bad breath in toddlers is thumb-sucking. Thumb-sucking children are likely to have throat infections brought about by sucking of dirty thumbs or other fingers. Bacterial transfer from thumbs or finger to the mouth can have a significant effect on your kid’s throat. On rare occasions, young kids suck on blanket which can lead to drying of the mouth. Among the causes of bad breath in toddlers may include dehydration, improper brushing, irregular snacking, and drinking throughout the day, and increased oral bacteria.

To better improve most cases of bad breath in toddlers (even to adults), mouth odor-causing bacteria should be minimized and saliva should be increased. Proper tooth brushing technique can help promote healthy gums and teeth. Tongue should also be brushed every time your toddler brushes her teeth in the morning, evening, and every after meal. While your kid is brushing her teeth, you should be monitoring to make sure she does not swallow the toothpaste and to make certain proper tooth brushing is done. Let your toddler drink plenty of water. Immediately treat your child’s allergy and cold, and suction your child’s nose with nasal aspirator, especially during at night to reduce the post nasal drip.

Besides administering your child when she brushes her teeth to ensure that it is properly done, you still have to bring your child to the doctor if you notice bad odor on her breath continues after four to five days. As you should know, bad breath in toddlers can be a sign of other serious illnesses. Don’t ever think that tooth brushing is enough to relieve bad breath in toddlers.

Do people flinch when you exhale? Or do you notice people leaning away from you during conversations?

Bad breath is an often embarrassing condition to have. Indeed, nothing fits the “social kill” picture than bad breath. Yet, not many people with bad breath are even aware they have this problem. And those who are aware simply attribute it to something they ate. Nothing they couldn’t get rid of with a little floss here and a little mouthwash there, right?

However, while most bad breath cases come from the mouth, bad breath may also emanate from the throat – or the back of the throat to be more precise – which usually means that the condition is serious.

Bad breath in throat is very rare since the bacteria that cause that rotten egg-smelling odor usually live in the mouth, not in the throat. The odor is actually caused by volatile sulfur compounds that are released by bacteria as they consume the food debris and particles left in your mouth. Sulfur compounds may also be released from the very food you ate, especially if these foods are high in sulfur, like garlic and cabbage.

Now, if the odor seems to be coming from the throat, then the bad breath could be caused by something besides the bacteria in your mouth. Bad breath could originate in one of several places: the sinuses, the lungs, or the throat itself.

Sinuses

Your sinuses contain nasal glands that regularly secrete mucus used to keep the nasal passages clean and clear. In conditions affecting the sinuses, such as sinusitis or allergic reactions, these glands could go on overdrive and produce too many secretions, resulting in post nasal drip – or that dripping feeling coming from the back of your throat. This causes bad breath in throat as the extra mucus accumulating in the back of the throat produce an unpleasant odor.

These conditions are more often than not temporary and treatable with the right medication from the doctor. Treating them should take care of bad breath in throat.

Lungs

Contrary to popular belief, the lungs do not release any bad odor. However, certain odorous substances that are absorbed into bloodstream may be carried on to the lungs and expelled when you breathe. These substances may be coming from the food you ate, especially foods that are highly rich in sulfur such as garlic and cabbages. The sulfur compounds get absorbed into the bloodstream and are then tided over to the lungs so that when you exhale, the odor is released as well.

Throat

Although extremely rare, bad breath in throat may also be caused by problems with the throat itself. Disorders such as tonsillitis could cause bad breath in throat. Food particles in the mouth may infect the tonsils, causing bacteria to release odorous substance leading to bad breath in throat.

Once a tooth has been extracted, bacteria will still be alive in the mouth, even more so with those who have bad oral hygiene. Infections are very common following extractions. Depending on how bad the tooth was that the dentist removed, he may prescribe you some antibiotics to take that will greatly reduce your risk of getting an infection. In some cases though, even antibiotics can’t prevent an infection.

If you go to the dentist before the extraction experienced swelling of the face, swollen gums, pain in your teeth under light pressure, or bleeding around the extraction site, then you may already have an infection. If you indeed have an infection before you get the tooth treated, the dentist will prescribe you antibiotics to use following treatment. If you have a really bad abscess, you’ll need to use antibiotics to treat the infection before the dentist will remove the tooth.

In some cases, people develop an infection after the extraction, even though they may not have been infected beforehand. The reason for this, is bacteria. Following an extraction, bacteria will be more alive in the mouth than ever before. With the extraction site being exposed, the bacteria will be able to get into the site. This can lead to an infection due to the site being exposed and the fact that you are unable to use mouthwash or brush during the first 24 – 48 hours. Not being able to sterilize your mouth means that you are unable to kills the germs responsible for bacteria.

After extractions, the first sign of infection is renewed bleeding. This normally occurs around 48 hours after the extraction. Even though it normally isn’t severe, you should still call your dentist and make an appointment to be seen. Your dentist will be able to stop the bleeding and give you some antibiotics and other prescriptions that will fix the problem.

Some dentists prefer to give patients antibiotics before they will do any type of extraction. Although you may not have an abscess, most dentists prefer to get rid of the infection before they start doing their work. They do this because they know the local anesthesia won’t work all that good with infections, and it may take them a lot of work and a lot of medicine to numb the area that you have the infection in.

In the event that the tooth has to be removed and the dentist simply cannot wait a few days, it is possible to get you numbed. Although it will take quite a bit of medicine to numb the area, it can be done. Sometimes, dentists will choose to use an IV sedation or laughing gas, in the event that local numbing doesn’t help. An IV sedation will normally put you to sleep or knock you out, so that the dentist can remove the tooth that is causing you so much trouble.

Even though infections can cause a lot of pain and need to be dealt with immediately, you may not have to take antibiotics once the dentist has extracted the tooth. If your mouth is clean and you don’t have a lot of germs, you can normally heal the would by taking care of it. Rinsing your mouth out with salt water for the first few days will keep the extraction site clean. As long as you take care of the extraction site and do what your dentist tells you, you shouldn’t have any further problems with the extraction site or the infection.

Summary: Causes of bad breath in dogs can be traced not only to the dental and gum disease but also to kidney and liver disease.

Do you have animals, especially dogs? I, as dog lover, make sure to own a dog ever since when I was a kid. Even my whole family loves dog and we treat our favorite pet member of the family. When I got married, I left my dog with my parents and since my husband knows that dogs are my favorite pets, he got me one a few weeks before our wedding. Isn’t that sweet?

As a responsible dog owner, I always make it a point to feed and clean my dog. But, it’s not enough. There’s more to feeding, bathing, and walking your dogs. For those who also love and own dogs (like me), it is important for you to know why dogs have bad breath and what causes bad breath in dogs.

Tooth and gum problems are the most common medical condition of cats and dogs because bad breath in dogs and other pets usually accompanied with other health problems. Even if bad breath in your pets does not bother you or you don’t find it offensive, it is still best to treat the problem.

Tartar build up surrounding the teeth of your dog is the most common cause of bad breath. Just like in our case, if small food particles left in between our teeth, these food particles will decay resulting to become a friendly environment for oral bacteria to grow. And when they grow, they become plaque. Plaque and other oral infections are responsible for the bad breath in dogs. In addition, plaque sticks to the base of teeth causing inflammation and receding of gums. Eventually these gum problems contribute to the foul smell of your dog’s breath.

Have you notice your puppies that puppies have different breath odor? I won’t say it’s stinky or offensive, but it’s just that it smells puppy breath. This is because young puppies that is in the process of shedding their baby teeth usually salivate and bad breath. Brushing your puppies’ mouth with water mixed with baking soda gives them relief and minimizes bad breath. In older pets, liver and kidney diseases usually affect the mouth; therefore, bad breath can possibly be traced through organ failure. Kidney and liver disease can lead to dental disease and dental disease can lead to liver and kidney diseases. You can immediately identify if your dog has dental problems for they usually drool.

Bad breath in dogs is treatable. You just have to be observant to the health conditions of your pets. Here are several helpful tips in the treatment of bad breath in dogs:

o	Yearly general and dental check up helps you monitor the condition of your dog, including bad breath.

For you to know more about the said condition; here are some of the basic information on gum disease. Gum disease or more known in the medical world as periodontal disease. It is a chronic inflammation and infection of the gingiva or commonly called as gums. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss among adults.

Recent studies have come up with additional information on gum disease. Further studies proved that bacterial plaque (a sticky, colorless film that forms on the surface of the teeth) is the main cause of gum disease. Additional studies regarding information on gum disease show that specific gum diseases can and are associated with specific bacterial types. If a specific plaque is not removed, it will accumulate and will solidify into calculus (more known as tartar). The toxins that are produced by the bacterial plaque will cause irritation to the gums and will cause the breakdown of the attachment fibers that holds the teeth to the gums, hereby, creating pockets around the teeth. These pockets will gradually be filled with more toxins.

The Academy of General Dentistry released additional information on gum disease stating that, genetics is one factor of gum disease. The information on gum disease that Academy of General Dentistry has made public also states that individuals who have a low in nutrition diet can lessen the ability of the body to fight infection. Individual who smoke cigarette or individuals who use spit tobacco are more likely to experience irritation on the gum tissues than non smokers and tobacco users.

The information on gum disease that was just recently released recommends that patients should visit their dentist more frequently if they experience any discomfort on their gums. They advised the public not to disregard any minor gum discomfort. Some gum diseases are painless and often take years before the usual signs and symptoms of gum disease appear or felt.

So how do you prevent gum disease? Preventing gum disease is very simple. All it takes is to exercise regular dental hygiene. Plaques can be removed by brushing your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day. Flossing daily can prevent formation of plaque on hard to reach areas. Rinsing your mouth with antibacterial mouthwash will provide additional protection against gum disease. Visit your dentist regularly or at least once every six months to monitor and maintain the wellness of your gums.

If you want to know more information on gum disease, visit your dental hygienist or dentist. They will provide you with all the information you will need to know regarding gum problems or gum diseases. Take good care of your gums to have a beautiful smile.

How to fight gum disease or how do we fight gum disease? In order to win the battle against gum disease, you must first know its causes and risk factors. Gum disease, or medically known as periodontal disease, is the condition wherein the gums, attachment fibers and the bone surrounding the teeth are inflamed or infected. It is caused by the bacterial growth and other factors which progressively damage the tissue surrounding and supporting the teeth. The word “periodontal” literally means “around the tooth”.

There are many ways on how to fight gum disease. The best way on how to fight gum disease is by preventing its development. Experts agree that individuals who have vitamin C deficiency have higher rates of gum disease. Vitamin C is known to help prevent gum disease because vitamin C is an antioxidant. Antioxidants repair the connective fibers and hasten the regeneration of the damaged bone caused by gum disease. Another way on how to fight gum disease is by applying tea tree oil gel. Tea tree oil gel fights the development of gingivitis into periodontitis. Drinking cranberry juice is a good on how to fight gum disease. Cranberries fight the bacteria from sticking to the teeth. Another means on how to fight gum disease by reducing your stress level. Stress hastens the development of gum disease by increasing the accumulation of plaque in the mouth. Stress contributes to the accumulation of plaque and gum bleeding.

Vitamin D can also lessen the susceptibility of gum disease. Vitamin D is known to have anti-inflammatory property thus reducing the inflammation of the gums. The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements recommends that 10 to fifteen minutes of exposure of the sun two times a week can trigger the synthesis of vitamin D in the skin, thus, reducing the bleeding of the gums during gum probing. The sunlight is the most abundant source of vitamin D.

The easiest way to fight gum disease is by exercising regular oral hygiene. Brushing your teeth at least two times a day will remove the plaque even before it accumulate and hardens into calculus. Using fluoride toothpaste helps prevent decay on the teeth. Flossing your teeth daily is highly advised. Flossing removes the hard to reach plaque in between your teeth where mere brushing can not reach. Rinsing the mouth with an antimicrobial mouthwash will give additional protection against plaque; consult your dentist for proper mouthwash use. And the best way to fight gum disease is by visiting your dentist for check up on a regular basis. It is one sure way of making sure that your teeth and gums are healthy.

Experts say that there is a connection between gum disease and heart disease. If you take good care of your gums, you are also taking good care of your heart.
